Chapter Eight

The moment Erik opened his eyes, he could feel a sense of closeness and warmth that wasn’t just his lover’s body pressed up right beside him. Despite the awful taste in his mouth from waking up in the morning and the sleep in his eyes, Erik felt a weight off of his shoulders for the first time since he and Micah bound each other. Even with all the bullshit happening around them, being bundled up next to his lover and sharing in each other’s warmth underneath a soft, thick blanket was a moment of respite from all of the crazy.

Micah deserved his rest. And so, pulling on a white shirt and a pair of cotton pajama bottoms, he exited the room to see Kai and Darius seated on the dining table, eating some breakfast. Darius’s eyes caught his gaze, and raising a hand in greeting, Kai turned to look at Erik dead in the eyes, a big grin on his face. After their talk the other day, Erik knew that the two of them were probably on the same page.

“Morning, champ,” Kai teased. “Get your breakfast. You slept in late today.”

“Dang, and I thought it was still the crack of dawn. Winters are really different here,” Erik drawled. “I’m so used to warmer weather. All this chilly cold is making me feel like sleeping in constantly.” He traipsed on over to get himself a mug of hot coffee before settling in an empty chair to one side, beside Darius.

“Well, you can definitely do that. It’s a snow day. Most work is canceled. Except for Zack and Rain, because they’re married to their work if they’re not married to each other,” Kai quipped, and Darius shook his head.

“How’s Micah doing?” Darius turned to look at Erik.

“He’s doing okay. Not much to say, really. He’s been a little restless, though.”

Darius nodded. Kai lifted the thick tray of pancakes and slid some of the maple syrup toward Erik, who only stacked the food onto his plate before grabbing a single strip of bacon with his free hand, wielding the coffee in the other, taking a sip and then a crispy, crunchy bite of the bacon.

“Hands,” Kai chastised. “I hope those are clean.” Erik gave an unabashed grin, but he did stop using his hands and decided on picking up a fork to eat with.

“So uptight about the food when Micah’s still asleep and we’re both finished eating anyway.” Darius grinned. “Don’t worry so much.”

Kai rolled his eyes, shaking his head, although he had a big grin on his face. “Yeah, yeah, I know, I can get a bit crazy with the doting.”

“Well, wasn’t there a saying about that?” Erik piped up with a little sigh of satisfaction as soon as the bittersweet tang of coffee hit his tongue. “You can’t spell ‘smother’ without ‘mother’?”

“Is Kai smothering again?” Micah’s voice piped up from the side as he yawned, rubbing his eyes. Erik turned to see his lover dressed in a big, baggy shirt, one of Erik’s own, and looking amazing.
